Ideas for Talking About Prescriptions - Get Involved in October & Beyond
October 2007
  • Plan, organize, promote, and conduct a Medication Use Safety Training (MUST for Seniors) program in your community. Everything you need can be found on the MUST for Seniors website www.mustforseniors.org.
  • Place information about your MUST for Seniors program in your organization's newsletters and magazines. The articles from NCPIE's 2007 "Talk About Prescriptions" Month planning materials can easily be adapted for local newspapers and newsletters.
  • Contact local radio stations. Ask them to include coverage of safe medicine use in their health and wellness programming. The MUST for Seniors program web site www.mustforseniors.org includes a handy fact sheet on medicine use issues and older adults for reference. Let the station know that you can provide on-air experts.
  • Contact local television health and science reporters. Ask them to air stories about the safe and effective use of prescription medicines. Use NCPIE's new report, Enhancing Prescription Medicine Adherence: A National Action Plan, for story ideas that spotlight the magnitude of the problem and steps that consumers and healthcare professionals can take to promote improved adherence and better health outcomes. Offer to provide on-air experts.
  • Take "Medicines in My Home," into the classroom and community meetings. Consumers of all ages can benefit from discussions about how to use medicines safely and effectively. In 2006, NCPIE partnered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to offer "Medicines in My Home," at www.fda.gov/medsinmyhome. The program has expanded to include materials for conducting a Medicines in My Home session for adults, in addition to middle-school-age children, the programs' initial target audience.
  • Promote your activities so others can learn from your experiences. Send information about your "Talk About Prescriptions" or MUST for Seniors activities to: NCPIE, 4915 Saint Elmo Ave., Suite 505, Bethesda, MD 20814-6082, or by email to: ncpie@ncpie.info.
